Payments and Tax for E-Export from Turkey: Starting Without Fear

Payments and Tax for E-Export from Turkey: Starting Without Fear

What scares people starting e-export most is not selling but the question "how will I get paid and how do I pay tax on it?" The good news: the process is simpler than it looks, and Turkey has mechanisms that support small exporters. This article does not replace an accountant's advice, but it makes the map clearer; for details always work with your accountant and current regulations.

Collecting the money

There are two main ways to collect from overseas customers. If you sell on a marketplace such as Etsy or Amazon, the platform collects payment and transfers your balance to your bank account or to an intermediary such as Payoneer. If you sell on your own site, for example on Shopify, you collect directly through Stripe, PayPal or Payoneer. For many Turkish sellers Payoneer is a practical starting point, thanks to its multi-currency accounts and compatibility with marketplaces.

Sole trader or company?

Once you start selling regularly you need a legal structure. Most new exporters start as a sole trader: it is quick and cheap to set up. As turnover grows, moving to a limited company is worth considering. The right structure depends on your turnover, the number of partners and your growth plans. Settle this with your accountant, not by guessing.

Understanding tax, not avoiding it, is what sets you free. An entrepreneur who knows the system is always ahead of one who fears it.

Micro-export and the ETGB

Turkey has a "micro-export" regime for low-weight, low-value shipments. Under it, you can export without a customs broker by having an express carrier file an ETGB (electronic commerce customs declaration). Because ETGB shipments count as official exports, you may be able to reclaim the VAT you paid on goods bought domestically, which directly improves your margin. Check the current limits and conditions with your carrier and accountant.

Why record keeping matters

The most valuable habit for an exporter is keeping regular records. Keep the revenue of every sale, the invoice for every expense and the receipt for every payment in order. This makes tax easier and shows you which product is really profitable. Even a simple spreadsheet removes the end-of-month panic of "I sold, so where is the money?"

Payments and tax are fears that grow when postponed and shrink when faced. Start small, learn the system with your first few sales, then formalise the structure as you grow. Selling from Turkey to the world has never been more accessible; what you need is the right information and the discipline to keep records.
