Social Commerce: Is Influencer Marketing Dead?

Social Commerce: Is Influencer Marketing Dead?

Consumers no longer trust "polished" ads. Instead, they're looking for authentic experiences from people they identify with — someone who says "they're just like me." The era of User Generated Content (UGC) has arrived. This shift is fundamentally changing how marketing budgets should be allocated.

Macro or Micro?

Rather than chasing celebrities with millions of followers, work with micro-influencers who genuinely use and love your product. Authentic-looking review videos on TikTok and Reels are consistently observed to generate significantly higher engagement than produced advertisements. The reason is simple: viewers sense that the person on screen truly believes what they're saying.

A micro-influencer typically has between 5,000 and 100,000 followers, clusters around a specific niche, and genuinely influences their audience. Industry research consistently highlights that engagement rates run significantly higher than those of macro influencers. And the cost? Often, sending a product or paying a small fee is enough.

Platform-by-Platform Strategy

  • TikTok: The most powerful platform for rapid discovery. Unboxing, "get ready with me," and before/after formats perform especially well. Highest viral potential of any channel.
  • Instagram Reels: Ideal for aesthetics-heavy products. Very strong in home décor, fashion, and beauty. Shopping tag features connect directly to sales.
  • YouTube Shorts: Longer shelf life. Content that disappears from TikTok in 24 hours stays discoverable on YouTube for months.
  • Pinterest: Highest purchase intent of any platform. Users typically open Pinterest because they're looking to buy something — visually strong products must have a presence here.
"The best advertisement is the one your customer makes for you."

How to Build a UGC Strategy

Don't wait passively for UGC — actively encourage it. Include a small card in your packaging that invites customers to share a photo. Create a brand-specific hashtag. Offer incentives like discount codes or free shipping to customers who post.

Don't limit the UGC you collect to social media alone. Add customer photos to your product pages and feature real user experiences in your email campaigns. Authentic content is widely observed to meaningfully lift conversion rates — one of the highest returns you can achieve without spending additional budget.
